Al-Azhar unveils 10-point initiative to end Egypt's political crisis


Endorsed by parties and groups from across Egypt's political spectrum, ten-point Al-Azhar initiative aims to end country's ongoing political crisis

Egypt's Al-Azhar on Thursday declared its sponsorship of an initiative aimed at ending Egypt's political crisis and stopping the violence currently taking place in the country. 


The initiative was announced following a meeting held at Al-Azhar's Cairo headquarters led by Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayib and attended by representatives of various political parties and Egypt's three churches (Coptic-Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical) – including Coptic Pope Tawadros II – along with Salafist preachers.


The initiative is based on four main points:
  1. the sacred character of Egyptian blood; 
  2. the recognition of diversity as the basis of Egyptian society;
  3. calls for media and religious leaders to denounce violence
  4. and call for peaceful protests; and the recognition of dialogue as the only way to resolve outstanding differences.
The initiative includes the following points:


1- The right to life is guaranteed by all religions and laws; there is no good to any a nation or society that fails to recognise the sacred character of human life.


2- Distinctions must be drawn between political action and violent criminal action, with an emphasis on the sanctity of public and private property and blood.


3- Emphasis must be put on the duty of the state and its security apparatuses to protect the citizenry, their constitutional rights and freedoms, and public and private property without breaching human rights and laws.


4- The denunciation – along with the legal and religious criminalisation – of violence in all of its forms.


5- The condemnation of incitement to violence.


6- The condemnation of all calls for violence, defamation of the other, spreading rumours against public figures and entities, and recognition of these actions as ethical crimes.


7- A commitment to peaceful means of engaging in politics and raising Egypt's next generation into a culture of peaceful political discourse.


8- A commitment to serious dialogue between different political groups, especially in times of crisis, aimed at reinforcing a culture of respect for diversity.


9- The protection of Egyptian society from sectarian and racist calls, illegal militant groups and illegal foreign intervention.


10-The protection of the Egyptian state is the responsibility of all parties: the government, opposition, the people, the youth, the elderly, political parties, groups and movements.


Among the political figures that attended the meeting were: Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the Constitution Party; Mahmoud Ezzat of the Muslim Brotherhood; Saad El-Katatni, Freedom and Justice Party founder; Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh, head of the Strong Egypt party; Younes Makhioun, head of the Salafist Nour Party; Amr Hamzawy, head of the Free Egypt Party; Ahmed Said, head of the Free Egyptians party; Hamdeen Sabbahi, head of the Egyptian Popular Current; Amr Moussa, head of the Conference Party; El-Sayed El-Badawi, head of the liberal Wafd Party; Abul-Ela Madi, head of the Wasat Party; and Ayman Nour, head of the Ghad Al-Thawra Party.


Representatives of Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya and its Reconstruction and Development Party also attended, along with prominent Salafist preacher Mohamed Hassaan.


The meeting, sponsored by Al-Azhar, was an initiative planned by several 'revolutionary' figures, including Wael Ghoneim, Mostafa El-Naggar, Islam Lotfy, Abdel Rahman Youssef and April 6 youth movement founder Ahmed Maher.


"The aim of this meeting is not political, but rather to launch an initiative to stop the violence. It's a moral initiative aimed at stopping the bloodshed. That is why Egyptian youth called on Al-Azhar to hold this meeting and gather together all Egypt's political forces and parties," Ghoneim, a prominent activist, declared at a press conference held after the meeting.


It was not Al-Azhar's first political initiative. Last year, the famous religious institute presented a similar initiative aimed at resolving the crisis over the drafting of Egypt's new constitution.

(I took a lot of flack from many “alternative” sites who have been claiming that this “new revolution’ was actually the “real revolution” in Egypt while I was telling people over and over again to simply READ the new constitution and the actual events which lead up to the mini-crisis. I told you repeatedly that this new uprising was completely staged by our interests in order to keep a completely anti-neoliberal constitution from being voted on and accepted by the majority of the people in Egypt which is EXACTLY what happened. And here we are; I just found this article linked to at What Really Happened, a site that was promoting the Egyptian constitution as a creation of our state department.)


A senior Egyptian analyst revealed that the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, as well as a mysterious group of masked young men called the Black Bloc who present themselves as defenders of the opposition to President Mohammad Mursi’s rule and Dubai Police Chief Dahi Khalfan have played the major roles in fomenting the recent unrests in Egypt.

The so-called Black Bloc group, Mossad and also the team of Dahi Khalfan, the police chief of Dubai, play the influential roles in creating chaos and unrests in Cairo,Ebrahim al-Darawi, the director of Cairo’s Palestine Studies Center, told FNA on Wednesday.

He said that the newly-formed Black Bloc group persuades the Egyptian youth to stir chaos and embark on acts of sabotage by promising them better job opportunities.

Darawi referred to the UAE’s opposition to Egypt’s ruling system, and said, “Dubai Police Chief Dahi Khalfan’s team plays a major and influential role in supporting the plots hatched to create chaos and unrest in Cairo.

He warned that the advocates of chaos in Egypt will stage street wars in the country in the future to topple President Mursi’s government and empower the remnants of the former regime.

Violence which erupted in Egypt last Thursday has so far claimed an estimated 60 lives. Thousands of protestors openly defied a curfew on Monday night as troops were deployed across Ismailia, Port Said and Suez – three cities put under emergency rule for 30 days.

The unrest, which had also gripped Cairo and Alexandria, appeared to wane on Tuesday, although near Cairo’s Tahrir Square some youths again hurled stones while police fired tear gas. Street cleaners swept away remains of burnt tires and other debris.

Army Chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who is both head of the Egypt’s military and its defense minister, said that “continuation of the conflict” could lead to the “collapse of the state and threaten future generations.

He added that one goal of the troop deployments was to protect the Suez Canal that is vital for Egypt’s economy and world trade.

The continuation of this situation, without a solution from all parties, leads to serious consequences affecting the stability of the country,el-Sissi said, adding that “the Egyptian army will remain the consistent and solid pillar of the state.

The US-trained general made his remarks while addressing military academy cadets. His remarks were published on the armed forces’ social network site.

Israeli forces attacked a target on the Syrian-Lebanese border overnight, Western diplomats and regional security sources said on Wednesday, at a time of growing concern over the fate of Syrian chemical and conventional weapons

The Israel Defense Forces refused to confirm or deny the report. "We do not comment on reports of this kind," an IDF spokeswoman said.

The reported attack came soon after the Lebanese media said that Israel Air Force jets had flown over Lebanon's airspace in three separate missions late Tuesday and early Wednesday. There was no confirmation of that report from Israel, either.


10:00 P.M. Sky News in Arabic reports that Syrian opposition activists claim that the research institute that was attacked is known to be a weapons development center, which also produces chemical weapons. 

9:20 P.M. Syrian state TV and army spokesmen say that Israeli warplanes bombed a military research center in the Jermana area northwest of the capital, Damascus, killing two people, wounding five and causing severe damage to the facility. According to the report, Israeli fighter jets infiltrated Syrian airspace from the southwest, flying under the radar at low altitude. Army figures called the strike a serious violation of Syrian sovereignty and asserted that Israel was trying to aid anti-Assad rebels. They did not mention any Syrian response to the attack.

8:30 P.M. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, asked during his daily press conference about reports of an Israeli attack in Syria, responded: "No comment. I refer you to the Israeli government." (Barak Ravid) 

7:05 P.M. Speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, a U.S.­ government official confirms that the Israeli strike hit a convoy of trucks. U.S. officials, however, say they are tracking Syria's chemical weapons and that they still appear to be solidly under regime control. Israel suspects that Damascus obtained a battery of SA-17s from Russia after an alleged Israeli airstrike in 2007 that destroyed an unfinished Syrian nuclear reactor. The Israeli military declined to comment, and Syrian officials and state media continue to be silent on the issue. (AP)

6:48 P.M. The website Lebanon Now reports that the convoy that was attacked departed from somewhere around the city of al-Kassir in western Syria, located some 15 kilometers from the Lebanese border, and was headed for the Hermel area in northern Lebanon.  The source added that the convoy was carrying self-propelled strategic weapons meant for Hezbollah. 6:10 P.M. Speaking to the Associated Press, two "regional security officials" say Israel conducted an air strike inside Syria overnight near the border with Lebanon. While they did not say what the target was, they did say that Israel had been making plans in the days leading up to the air strike to hit a shipment of weapons bound for the anti-Israel militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to the officials, the shipment included sophisticated, Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, which would be strategically "game-changing" in the hands of Hezbollah. (AP)

5:40 P.M. Al-Arabiya reports that the target of the air strike was a convoy of trucks carrying advanced anti-aircraft missiles. Sky News correspondent Sam Kiley, quoting security sources not connected to the attack, also reported that the attack was carried out against trucks carrying anti-aircraft missiles capable of limiting the freedom of action of Israeli Air Force jets over Lebanon. Kiley also suggested that the missiles could be of the type used against naval ships.

4:11 P.M. Lebanese security official says no evidence found of Israeli strikes on Lebanon's side of the border. (Haaretz)

4:07 P.M. A few hours after first reports, both Al-Jazeera and Al Arabiya are still ignoring the incident. (Haaretz)



4:02 P.M. Sky News Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall: "If you put it all together and if there is movement of significant weapons coming out of Syria toward Lebanon, it would be probably be one of two things: Chemical weapons, or equally problematical for the Israelis, the air defense systems that Syria has many of. Both of those are a red line for the Israelis."


3:57 P.M. Minister Silvan Shalom: "The international community has stated more than once that it takes developments in Syria, which might have negative ramifications, very seriously. Any negative development, of course, should be prevented." (Army Radio)

3:20 P.M. Vice Premier Silvan Shalom, speaking on Israel Radio, was asked if there was unusual activity on the northern front. "The entire world has said more than once that it takes developments in Syria very seriously, developments which can begin negative directions. And therefore the world, led by [U.S.] President [Barack] Obama who has said this more than once, is taking all possibilities into account and of course any development which is a development in a negative direction would be something that needs stopping and prevention."

3:08 P.M. Lebanese news site Naharnet: Total of 12 Israeli fighter jets enter Lebanese air space over last 24 hours.


3:03 P.M. Security source tells AFP: The air force bombed a weapons convoy just as it was crossing from Syria into Lebanon.

2:56 P.M. The French newspaper Le Figaro: Israeli security sources say the target of the attack was a weapons convoy traveling from Syria into Lebanon. Not clear whether the attack took place inside Syria or in Lebanese territory.

2:27 P.M. Reuters reports that Israel has sent its national security adviser, Yaakov Amidror, to Russia and its military intelligence chief Major-General Aviv Kochavi to the United States for consultations. 

1:58 P.M. Laura Rozen, of Al-Monitor, posts on Twitter that the "#Israel jets said to have struck alleged weapons convoy in Syria, after #IDF intel chief consultations in Washington".

1:45 P.M. Security source: There was definitely a hit in the border area";  A Western diplomat in the region who asked about the strike said "something has happened", without elaborating.

An activist in Syria who works with a network of opposition groups around the country said that she had heard of a strike in southern Syria from her colleagues but could not confirm.

The sources, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, had no further information about what might have been hit or where precisely the attack happened.

Background

Earlier this week, the Lebanon Army reported that the IAF had violated Lebanon's airspace on Saturday in four different incidents. The Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star reported that IAF fighter jets were seen flying around the Beka'a Valley.

Also Saturday, the Lebanese daily Al-Mustaqbal said that an explosion struck a weapons storage facility in an area of southern Lebanon controlled by Hezbollah. The report was not confirmed by Lebanon's government or by the Lebanese army. The latter said it had conducted a number of controlled explosions on Saturday of munitions left over from the Second Lebanon War.

According to the daily, the explosion took place in the small town of Machghara, located in the Beka'a Valley. It said that a cloud of smoke was seen rising from the site, which was quickly cordoned off by Hezbollah forces.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned his cabinet ministers of the risk that chemical weapons from Syria could be falling into the hands of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"It is necessary to look at our surroundings, both at what is happening with Iran and its proxies, and what is happening in other arenas - lethal weaponry in Syria, which is steadily breaking up," Netanyahu said during the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

Also Sunday, Vice Premier Silvan Shalom said that any sign that Syria's grip on its chemical weapons was slipping, as President Bashar al-Assad fights rebels trying to overthrow him, could trigger Israeli intervention.  
 
The commander of the Israel Air Force, Major General Amir Eshel, on Tuesday issued his own warning over the volatility of Syria and its weapons. Addressing the international space conference in Herzliya, Eshel described Syria as a "country falling apart", adding: "Nobody has any idea right now what is going to happen in Syria on the day after, and how the country is going to look. This [sectarian crisis] is happening in a place with a huge weapons arsenal, some of which are new and advanced, and some of which are not conventional."

Israeli sources said on Tuesday that Syria's advanced conventional weapons would represent as much of a threat to Israel as its chemical arms should they fall into the hands of Syrian rebel forces or Hezbollah guerrillas based in Lebanon.

You might think Labour MPs would not want to favour a company which practised racial discrimination, paid its workers less than half the minimum wage, on casual terms, in poor working conditions, which mislabelled its products in order to fool consumers. Hague says 2-state solution should be single highest priority for new US government

'I hope that whatever Israeli Government emerges will recognise that we are approaching the last chance of bringing about such a solution' Foreign Secretary William Hague told the House of Commons last Tuesday. Despite reports of Britain and France 'spearheading' a two-state initiative (see link in post), Mr. Hague insisted that nothing would happen without the intervention of the USA, for whom he thinks 'this should be the single highest priority for new momentum in American foreign policy', which seems to blunt the European spear.

A government official has for the first time acknowledged the practice of injecting women of Ethiopian origin with the long-acting contraceptive Depo-Provera.

Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu has instructed the four health maintenance organizations to stop the practice as a matter of course.

The ministry and other state agencies had previously denied knowledge or responsibility for the practice, which was first reported five years ago.

Gamzu’s letter instructs all gynecologists in the HMOs "not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment.” He also instructed physicians to avail themselves of translators if need be.

Gamzu’s letter came in response to a letter from Sharona Eliahu-Chai of the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, representing several women’s rights and Ethiopian immigrants’ groups. The letter demanded the injections cease immediately and that an investigation be launched into the practice.

About six weeks ago, on an Educational Television program, journalist Gal Gabbay revealed the results of interviews with 35 Ethiopian immigrants. The women’s testimony could help explain the almost 50-percent decline over the past 10 years in the birth rate of Israel’s Ethiopian community. 

According to the program, while the women were still in transit camps in Ethiopia they were sometimes intimidated or threatened into taking the injection. “They told us they are inoculations,” said one of the women interviewed. “They told us people who frequently give birth suffer. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.

A government official has for the first time acknowledged the practice of injecting women of Ethiopian origin with the long-acting contraceptive Depo-Provera.

 

Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu has instructed the four health maintenance organizations to stop the practice as a matter of course. 

The ministry and other state agencies had previously denied knowledge or responsibility for the practice, which was first reported five years ago. 

Gamzu’s letter instructs all gynecologists in the HMOs "not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment.” 

He also instructed physicians to avail themselves of translators if need be.
Gamzu’s letter came in response to a letter from Sharona Eliahu-Chai of the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, representing several women’s rights and Ethiopian immigrants’ groups. The letter demanded the injections cease immediately and that an investigation be launched into the practice.

About six weeks ago, on an Educational Television program journalist Gal Gabbay revealed the results of interviews with 35 Ethiopian immigrants. The women’s testimony could help explain the almost 50-percent decline over the past 10 years in the birth rate of Israel’s Ethiopian community. According to the program, while the women were still in transit camps in Ethiopia they were sometimes intimidated or threatened into taking the injection. “They told us they are inoculations,” said one of the women interviewed. “They told us people who frequently give birth suffer. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.”

RESPONSE: The above quote is a wrong inference from a fiscal law in Shulchan Oruch, Choshen Mishpat 405.3, that relates to times when slavery was a standard and accepted practice across the world.

BLOGGER: Response is BS. Even during the time mentioned above, the quote of Talmud, which is supposed to be a holy book, should not be as it is.

CLAIM 02: "It is permitted to take the body and the life of a Gentile." Sepher ikkarim III c 25.


RESPONSE: This is a misquotation. Rabbi Yosef Albo (the author) was asked by a Christian thinker about seeming injustice of the laws of Judaism dealing with charging interest on a loan. (According to Deuteronomy 23:20 and 23:21, a Jew is not allowed to lend with interest to another Jew, but may do so to a Gentile).

R. Albo answers: The "Gentile" or "heathen" in the above passage refers to idolater, who refuses to keep seven Noahide laws. The laws are universal for all mankind: A) prohibition of idolatry, B) prohibition of blasphemy, C) prohibition of murder, D) prohibition of immorality and promiscuity, E) prohibition of theft, F) establishment of judicial system, G) prohibition of cruelty to animals.

Such a person, who does not respect other's rights, places himself apart from human community and therefore can expect to be treated according to his own rules. He is a threat to everyone around and hence if somebody kills him, that person is not charged. On the contrary, even according to non-Jewish philosophers in those days (14th and 15th century, Spain), as R Albo brings, such a person should be killed. So it is regarding money matters: the prohibition of taking interest, that applies to everybody, including a non-Jew who keeps the Noahide laws (as R. Albo mentions a few sentences earlier), do not apply to him.

BLOGGER: What a crackpot full of steaming shit. First, an idolater is not obliged to follow the Nohide laws. Second, even if he is, but violates them all or part thereof, he does not deserve to be killed by someone. Third, one can not just kill someone who has a different belief. Anybody is free to believe in whatever he wants as far as no harm is

RESPONSE: This is from the Shulcan Aruch and applies to killing Jewish heretics. The following line in this passage is that this law does not apply to anyone non-Jewish and it is forbidden to harm any gentile. The Jewish heretics are people which are a potential cause of harm and trouble to the Jewish nation. The penalty is designed to demonstrate the severity with which heretical views were considered, rather than a practical penalty as such penalties were rarely imposed. E.S./David S. Maddison.

The word "Rabbi" refers to one of the ancient scribes - supposedly a holy man - who participated in writing the "Talmud". In Arabic, which is a Semitic language and a cousin to Hebrew, the word is"Rabbanie", or "Rabbie", means a godly man. My question is, are they really godly? I strongly doubt that. Israel's new Ashkenazi chief rabbi case: JERUSALEM: Israel's new Ashkenazi chief rabbi is facing growing calls to step down amid allegations of misconduct. The allegations center on sexual harassment charges against Yona Metzger, as well as charges that he engaged in fraud and is not qualified for the post. Aides to Metzger have rejected the allegations as a smear campaign fueled by political rivals.

Metzger and his Sephardi counterpart, Rabbi Shlomo Amar, were elected as Israel's chief rabbis April 14 by a 150-member public committee. Since then, however,
opposition to Metzger has grown. In the latest development, a Tel Aviv accountant filed a petition Monday in the High Court of Justice challenging Metzger's appointment. It will be heard by a three-judge panel.


The petition claims that allegations of fraud and other improprieties involving Metzger were not fully investigated because of his 1998 pledge not to stand for chief rabbi of Tel Aviv. Metzger's spokesman, Roni Rimon, told the Israeli daily Ma'ariv that the petition was full of "lies, lies and more lies" produced by "professional slanderers.". Metzger had been accused of forging witnesses' signatures on marriage contracts and unlawfully demanding payment for performing weddings, the daily Ha'aretz reported. As a result of the allegations, Metzger's permit to serve as a chief rabbi of a major city was revoked. However, it was reinstated several months later after a hearing before three senior Israeli rabbis -- including Eliyahu Bakshi - Doron, a former Sephardi chief rabbi -- who accepted Metzger's explanations and his commitment to leave the Tel Aviv race, the paper said.

The petition also argues that the Metzger, 50, who previously was rabbi of north Tel Aviv, was not qualified to
fill the chief rabbi's duties as head of the country's rabbinic court system because he never had been a religious judge or rabbi of a major city. The
petition maintained that the elections committee for the chief rabbi was not adequately informed of the misconduct allegations against Metzger. In related development, Ma'ariv recently published what it said were sexual harassment allegations involving Metzger. Three weeks before Metzger's election as chief
rabbi, the paper reported, it learned of complaints from four adult men who
claimed Metzger had touched their arms, legs and chests and expressed admiration for their muscular physiques.


Park Avenue rabbi Case: A prominent Park Avenue rabbi had a mistress nearly half his age sign a bizarre cohabitation contract - promising she’d get liposuction, become better educated and continue their already hot-and-heavy sexual relationship in exchange for half his house, the woman claims in a bombshell lawsuit. The Jewish people have another map which our youth and adults should strive to fulfill -- From the Nile to the Euphrates."

We enthusiastically chose to become a colonial society, ignoring international treaties, expropriating lands, transferring settlers from Israel to the occupied territories, engaging in theft and finding justification for all these activities. Passionately desiring to keep the occupied territories, we developed two judicial systems: one - progressive, liberal - in Israel; and the other - cruel, injurious - in the occupied territories. In effect, we established an apartheid regime in the occupied territories immediately following their capture. That oppressive regime exists to this day.
