Obama, Netanyahu and the 1967 border

Obama's switch to a 'land now, peace later' approach is potentially appealing to both Netanyahu and Palestinians.

The furious reaction that ensued last week after President Barack Obama first articulated his vision of a future Israeli-Palestinian border "based on the 1967 lines" seemed like a case of much ado about nothing when Obama repeated and explained the very same idea a few days later at the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), where an audience of some 10,000 delegates reacted in a more friendly way.

What lies Behind Netanyahu’s Bluster on ’1967 Borders’

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s high dudgeon over the world community’s demand that Israel return more or less to ’1967 borders’ plays to two audiences, his domestic constituency among far rightwing ‘Greater Israel’ parties intent on usurping Palestinian land, and his American constituency among the third or so of US Jews who oppose trading land for peace.

An Anti-Israel President

The president's peace proposal is a formula for war.

Say what you will about President Obama's approach to Israel—or of his relationship with American Jews—he sure has mastered the concept of chutzpah.

On Thursday at the State Department, the president gave his big speech on the Middle East, in which he invoked the claims of friendship to tell Israelis "the truth," which to his mind was that "the status quo is unsustainable, and Israel too must act boldly to advance a lasting peace." On Friday in the Oval Office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his version of the truth, which was that the 1967 border proposed by Mr. Obama as a basis for negotiating the outlines of a Palestinian state was a nonstarter.

Obama Throws Palestine Under The Bus As World Hails His Courage
The illusions, delusions and fantasies surrounding events in the Middle East never cease to amaze.

The controversy over President Obama’s Middle East speech the latest bizarre development, with Prime Minister Netanyahu and commentators like Dore Gold and Tim Pawlenty denouncing the President’s statement that the 1967 borders (which were actually the ceasefire lines dating back to the 1948-49 war) should be the basis of negotiations for the boundaries between Israel and the Palestinians today.  Mitt Romney said President Obama has thrown Israel under the bus.

G8 to discuss Arab Spring, IMF post could feature

(Reuters) - G8 leaders will discuss aid for North African states after recent popular uprisings and ways to end the conflict in Libya at a summit this week, but could get sidetracked by wrangling over who should be the new IMF chief.

Exposing Netanyahu

Probably the most significant take-away from the past few days of U.S.-Israeli dialog is to shed light on the true intentions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding peace with the Palestinians. Although Netanyahu finally allowed the phrase “Palestinian state” to pass his lips for the first time almost two years ago, this past week in Washington provided further confirmation of what had been apparent all along: that whatever conception Netanyahu may have of such a “state,” it is not a formula having any chance of becoming the basis for—to use Netanyahu's own words from his joint appearance with President Obama on Friday—“a peace that will be genuine, that will hold, that will endure,” or probably even what most of the rest of the world would consider a state. Netanyahu is smart enough to realize this, which is to say he is content to let the status quo endure indefinitely. Israel will maintain that status quo through brute force—military force within the territories, and political force in Washington.

Binyamin Netanyahu has repeated his assertion that there can be no return to Israel's "indefensible" 1967 borders.

The Israeli prime minister made his pledge in an address on Monday to thousands of pro-Israel American Jews and US lawmakers in Washington, and promised to present his vision for an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement in a speech to Congress on Tuesday.
