This week, October 19th to 25th, 2015, Benjamin Netanyahu scandalised most people concerned with Jewish history with his claim that Amin al-Husseini, the Palestinian nationalist Grand Mufti, had put the idea of mass Judeocide into the suggestible Hitler’s head. (Chemi Shalev has traced this notion to an American academic – more on this next week). […]
Ask no questions, tell yourself some lies
Ephraim Mirvis, the Chief Rabbi of
the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, preaches that
‘Jews’ respect human life, unlike Palestinians. Robert Cohen is
shocked that Rabbi Mirvis displays no interest in the people Israel
oppresses, so negating his own plea for ‘peace and
communication’.
Is Israel sacred? Rabbis hold their peace
At a public meeting addressed by four
rabbis, organised by Independent Jewish Voices, Diana Neslen and Sylvia Cohen
go along to hear what they saw. They were deeply disappointed by their lack
– with one exception – of adherence to the prophetic tradition,
seeming to prefer Wittgenstein’s axiom ‘Whereof one cannot speak,
thereof one must be silent.’ On the reasons why they could not speak
out about Israel and Palestine, they remained silent. The writers are JfJfP
signatories.
Internationals pile in to stop MidEast violence
The ‘security’ situation
in Palestine/Israel has been kicked into a crisis by the ‘knife
intifada’. All international agencies fear a new MidEast crisis.
Significantly, they have not blamed Palestinians for this latest emergency.
“Security measures can be counterproductive if they are applied without
special efforts to defuse situations before people lose their lives. If the
use of force is not properly calibrated, it may breed the very frustrations
and anxieties, from which violence tends to erupt” said the UN.
BBC takes sides – but which side?
Those who support JfJfP or Palestine
Solidarity Campaign share one premise: there is a profound injustice in the
profound inequality between Israelis and Palestinians. This premise is not
shared by the media which has to take a position, however unwarranted, of
disinterested reportage. Ameena Salem of PSC, Ynet and JPost make their
arguments.
Israel’s plans for Britain
First get some agents on the ground.
Conservative Friends of Israel has clout but there’s no time to be
lost in training the next generation. Free trips to Israel, bags of
propaganda and most important, a pre-determined strategy: undermine the BDS
movement as antisemitic.
All (almost) Arab Israelis are loyal to their state
Israel’s Palestinian citizens
are largely Bedouin – as are most of the knife-attackers. Here Joint
List MK Zouheir Bahloul talks to Al Monitor about this troubled political
identity – which drew him from sports broadcasting into the Knesset.
Israel’s illegal use of chemical weapons against protesters
Earlier this week we posted reports
on the use of live fire by Israeli police which, contrary to
Netanyahu’s claim, did not get the Attorney General’s assent.
Here Mustafa Barghouti describes common methods of controlling Palestinians
used by Israel border police all of which are far more dangerous than their
euphemistic names suggest.
Disbelief and disgust meet Netanyahu’s claim of Palestinian incitement of Holocaust
This is a long posting with articles
from many sources. They do differ of course in their information and
comments, but the point of posting a dozen pieces is to demonstrate the scale
of the reaction to Netanyahu’s claim about the Grand Mufti. And as they
say of comment sections, you know they’ve lost the plot when they start
bringing Hitler into it.
Eritrean dies after being shot and crowd-kicked
Haftom Zarhum fled the harsh regime
in Eritrea for what he thought would be safety in Israel. It was his bad
luck that he went to Beer Sheva to renew his visa on the day a Palestinian
had shot several Israelis in the bus station. Although there was absolutely
no reason to think Zarhum had anything to do with it he was there, black and
non-Jewish and thus a threat. A security officer shot him. A crowd in the bus
station set about kicking him on the ground. He died later.
Netanyahu blames Palestinians for the Holocaust
We have become used to Netanyahu
abusing the history of the Holocaust for his own purposes. But this one loses
all touch with reality. The idea that Hitler would not have embarked on a
policy of judeocide had it not been for the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem is a
comment only on the desperation and deep racism of Israel’s Prime
Minister.
Wider use of lethal rifle fire by police does NOT get legal assent
Israeli police appear to have been
using snipers with long range rifles to control Palestinians for some time.
It is only permissible in Jerusalem. In September Netanyahu referred this
practice to the Attorney General for wider use. The AG did not agree,
whatever Netanyahu says. Haaretz and Times of Israel.
The right of self-defence belongs to the occupied not the occupier
Dr. Mahmoud Al-Mubarak,
Director-General of the Centre for International Legal Studies, Saudi Arabia,
provides a clear account of the legal provisions governing occupiers and
occupied. This does not include the actions of police and resisters in Israel
proper. He also proposes 3 tracks which Palestinians and supporters can
follow.
Children not spared in Israel’s new war
There is a reason why those under 18
are regarded as children: they lack the knowledge to understand the world
they live in and the causes and consequences of their actions, and to escape
the aggression of Israeli security forces. A report from Defence of Children
International-Palestine protests against the number of children – from
age 3 upward – who have been harmed by Israel’s military response
to the current unrest.
Israel on course for total control over oPt
Ignore the belligerent words of PM
Netanyahu and defence minister Ya’alon. The words and the shoot-to-kill
policy are intentional provocation of Palestinians argues Samah Sabawi, al
shabaka [as well as messages for international ears and jittery Israelis]. In
fact they are confident this ‘intifada’ can only confirm
settlement expansion and martial law in the West Bank.
Cheering on Israeli extra-judicial killings
Jonathan Cook and B’Tselem
raise the alarm at the common practice of extra-judicial killings carried out
by Israeli police who feel they have the licence to shoot dead any
Palestinian who looks suspicious (don’t they all?). The chances that
any police will be subject to judicial action or charge are virtually nil.
